Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi has revealed the sole condition under which he would consider joining Arne Slot’s Liverpool in January to help the team compete for trophies.”

Martin Zubimendi has sparked renewed speculation about Liverpool’s interest in signing him, despite having rejected a move to Anfield last summer to remain at Real Sociedad.

The Spanish midfielder chose to stay in San Sebastián, turning down Liverpool’s advances even when the Merseyside club was in urgent need of a defensive midfielder. This decision frustrated Liverpool’s recruitment team, who had hoped to fill a critical gap in their squad.

However, the arrival of Ryan Gravenberch and his subsequent strong performances have alleviated some of that pressure, giving manager Arne Slot a positive dilemma in terms of squad rotation.

Zubimendi Hints at Future Liverpool Move

In a recent interview with El Diario Vasco, Zubimendi discussed his decision to stay at Sociedad, suggesting that he is still open to a move in the future.

“The offer surprised me,” the Spanish international said. “It wasn’t something I had planned. I considered the pros and cons and decided that staying was the best option for me at that moment.”

He rejected the idea of a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity, adding, “If you’re good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There’s no need to rush.”

While reaffirming his commitment to Sociedad, Zubimendi emphasized his focus on personal development and his role within the club.

“I looked at my growth, the club’s project, and decided this season was crucial for me,” he explained. “It wasn’t a difficult decision—staying was what felt best for me.”

Departure Likely in the Future?

According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, Zubimendi may be reconsidering his stance on leaving Real Sociedad and could be open to a transfer next summer.

“Multiple reliable sources believe Martin Zubimendi is now accepting the idea of leaving Real Sociedad – and expect that to happen next summer,” Ornstein reported.

However, he pointed out that uncertainty remains, as Zubimendi has previously decided to stay despite similar speculation. This time, though, it seems the midfielder may be leaning toward a move, allowing both him and Sociedad ample time to plan a smooth transition.

Liverpool’s Interest Moving Forward

If Zubimendi decides to make the move in 2025, he could add depth and quality to Liverpool’s midfield, assuming the club’s interest remains. With players like Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai already at the club, Zubimendi’s addition could elevate Liverpool’s midfield to an elite level.

For now, Liverpool fans will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds, but the prospect of Zubimendi wearing the red shirt remains an exciting possibility.
