Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is now leading a very different life, three years after selling the Premier League club.
Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 for £140 million, ushering in the most successful era in the club’s history. Under his ownership, the Blues lifted 19 major trophies in 19 years, including five Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns.
However, in 2022 he was forced to sell the club following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The UK government, led at the time by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, claimed to have “clear evidence” linking Abramovich to the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin — allegations he firmly denied.
That May, Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium co-led by Todd Boehly for £4.25 billion. His spokesperson later confirmed, via The Athletic, that proceeds from the sale — frozen due to EU sanctions — were to be set aside for a charitable foundation.
Now, Abramovich’s time at Stamford Bridge faces renewed scrutiny after Chelsea were charged with 74 alleged breaches of Football Association regulations on Thursday.
