Liverpool were exceptional in the first half against Tottenham and came out even more determined in the second, with Mo Salah leading the charge.
Before the match, Salah was just one goal shy of Billy Liddell, a club legend who held the second-highest scoring record in Liverpool’s history and had more appearances than any other player. By the time the game kicked off, Liddell had dropped to fourth on the club’s all-time scoring list, with Salah ready to surpass him.
In his 373rd appearance for Liverpool, Salah witnessed a brilliant tackle from Andy Robertson that sparked a counter-attack, leading to a seamless team move. Cody Gakpo delivered a cross, and although Dominik Szoboszlai couldn’t convert, Salah was on hand to equal Liddell’s record – a fitting moment for the player wearing the same No. 11 shirt.
Just moments later, Szoboszlai set up Salah with a perfectly timed pass, and Salah calmly surpassed Liddell’s long-standing record, which had stood since March 1960. Remarkably, he achieved this in 161 fewer matches than Liddell.
Surpassing Liddell’s record is a massive accomplishment for Salah. Additionally, he became the first player in Premier League history to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists before Christmas – a remarkable achievement for the former Roma forward.
If Salah continues to chase records, there’s only one position left that Liddell never played for Liverpool – goalkeeper. Perhaps that’s the next challenge for the Egyptian King!
