Former Arsenal star and outspoken pundit Paul Merson has launched a scathing attack on Liverpool’s Premier League form, insisting the Reds’ strong start is built on luck rather than quality.
Speaking after a run of dramatic, narrow victories, Merson suggested Liverpool’s position flatters them and warned that their weaknesses will soon be exposed.
“I’ll say it again— with both of these Liverpool players playing out of position, they won’t do anything special this season. They’ve just been lucky. Soon they’ll be figured out, and when that happens, it’s game over. Liverpool should be mid-table. They’ve been gifted six points. Against Arsenal they never looked like scoring, against Newcastle it was the last kick of the game, and Burnley, a penalty in stoppage time. That’s six points handed to them,” Merson said.
His remarks have sparked outrage among Liverpool supporters, many of whom argue that manager Arne Slot’s tactical adaptability and the brilliance of stars like Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Alexis Mac Allister have been decisive factors.
Still, even loyal fans admit the Reds’ reliance on late goals and fine margins could prove risky against stronger opposition. If questionable positional selections continue, critics believe it may derail their ambitions for silverware.
