Hugo Ekitike’s move to Liverpool was one of the headline transfers of the summer – but it came with plenty of speculation.
For weeks, talk suggested Newcastle United were firmly in the race, perhaps even leading it, before Liverpool sealed the deal.
Now, the 23-year-old French striker has moved to set the record straight.
Was Ekitike Ever Close to Newcastle?
Speaking to Canal+ (via Foot Mercato), Ekitike dismissed claims of a possible Newcastle move. According to him, Liverpool was always the plan.
“Why Liverpool instead of Newcastle? It was my choice, it’s what I wanted,” he explained.
“I had more of a feeling coming here and I knew it was the right time and the right place for me. I wanted to get back to the top level and come back this time better equipped, more ready in all aspects. And I don’t think I was wrong.”
Flying Start at Anfield
Ekitike has wasted little time making his mark. In just seven appearances across all competitions under Arne Slot, he has already scored four goals.
The forward admitted he learned from his mixed spell at Paris Saint-Germain and felt Liverpool offered the perfect opportunity to step back into elite football.
Only Liverpool on His Mind
While much of the summer noise painted Newcastle as serious contenders, Ekitike insists that was never the case. There were no advanced talks or agreements – Liverpool was always his destination of choice.
