Former Premier League midfielder and pundit Robbie Mustoe has voiced concerns about Liverpool’s chances of winning the league this season, pointing directly to their defensive record as a major weakness.
“Champions don’t concede many goals, do they?” Mustoe explained. “When you look back at title-winning teams, very few of them concede 40 goals in a season. Most finish with a record of less than a goal conceded per game. The rate Liverpool are on right now is not sustainable.”
Mustoe suggested that Liverpool’s back line has yet to find consistency, raising questions about whether the issues stem from a team still trying to gel or from deeper structural problems. “The defensive problems we’ve seen with the goals conceded are an issue, and it comes back to hurt them. Something was going to give, wasn’t it? For the most part, Liverpool have been leaky.”
His comments add weight to a growing concern among supporters and analysts alike: unless Liverpool tighten up defensively, their attacking firepower may not be enough to sustain a genuine title challenge.
