Manchester United Eye Midfield Reinforcement — Major Signing Expected by 2026
Manchester United are planning to strengthen their midfield, with a new signing expected by 2026 — and possibly even earlier, in the upcoming January transfer window — according to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have endured a shaky start to the campaign under new manager Ruben Amorim, managing just three wins from their opening seven Premier League matches. The club’s management is reportedly exploring ways to reinforce the squad, with midfield being one of their top priorities.
During the closing days of the summer transfer window, United made an attempt to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and England. Although the move failed to materialize, the club could revisit similar opportunities when the market reopens in January. Romano noted that the decision will depend on what opportunities arise, as the January window is not typically known for big-money transfers. Instead, United may pursue a loan deal with an option to buy, if the right player becomes available.
Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Romano explained:
“It’s possible Manchester United will target a new midfielder in January, but it will depend on the market. The January window rarely brings blockbuster deals, so we might see them go for a loan or a last-minute opportunity — similar to the one they pursued for Conor Gallagher. Looking ahead, the club views midfield as an important area to strengthen in 2026.”
Manchester United were very active in the summer, spending over £200 million on key signings, including Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. On deadline day, they also completed the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who recently made his Premier League debut in a 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
Earlier in the window, United were also interested in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but the Seagulls refused to let him go. The club is now expected to revisit the midfield situation next year, especially as veteran Casemiro approaches the final stretch of his career. The Brazilian turns 34 in February, and his contract at Old Trafford expires in June, which could pave the way for a younger replacement.
Romano concluded by stressing that Manchester United view the midfield rebuild as “an important step” in shaping the team’s future under Amorim — with big plans set for 2026 and beyond.
