The Premier League quickly issued statements regarding the disallowed third goal and Liverpool’s second goal, following confusion over the extended VAR checks. As heavy favorites for the Boxing Day match, Liverpool aimed to extend their lead at the top of the table after Chelsea’s home defeat to Fulham.
The match began with Leicester taking the lead early on with a goal from Jordan Ayew in the sixth minute, amidst a foggy Anfield backdrop. Liverpool responded just before halftime when Cody Gakpo scored a well-executed goal to level the score.
After the break, the Reds took the lead with Curtis Jones’ close-range finish from an assist by Alexis Mac Allister. Controversy surrounded the goal, as Mohamed Salah appeared to be offside in the build-up. However, after reviewing both Salah’s and Virgil van Dijk’s positions, the goal was upheld, confirming Jones was onside.
The Premier League later clarified on Twitter/X: “The referee’s goal decision was checked and confirmed by VAR as Salah was onside in the build-up.” The message was also shown on the Anfield scoreboard shortly after Jones’ goal.
The controversy continued when Gakpo’s goal, a strike from a Salah cross, was ruled offside after another lengthy VAR check. The crowd reacted with boos, but the decision stood after VAR confirmed Darwin Nunez was offside in the build-up.
The Premier League further explained: “The referee’s decision of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR as Nunez was offside in the build-up.”
