Florian Wirtz’s time at Anfield has been one of steady adaptation rather than explosive numbers, but his market value continues to surge regardless.
The 22-year-old German playmaker joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a blockbuster deal worth up to $157 million, including add-ons. At the time, it was set to become both a club and British transfer record — until the Reds went on to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for $169 million.
Wirtz inherited Liverpool’s famous No. 7 shirt, vacated after Luis Díaz’s move to Bayern Munich, symbolizing the club’s faith in his potential. Though he’s yet to score his first goal for Liverpool, the midfielder has already provided three assists, two of which came in the Champions League. His recent display against Real Madrid — where he operated from the left flank — showcased flashes of his immense talent and creativity.
Since his high-profile arrival, Wirtz’s performances have been closely scrutinized. However, the CIES Football Observatory has offered encouraging news, valuing the German star at €173 million ($199.8 million) — a figure well above what Liverpool initially agreed to pay Leverkusen, even with add-ons included.
Given his age and room for growth, that valuation could climb even higher.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot recently came to Wirtz’s defense, emphasizing the player’s adaptation process and his contribution to the team.
“You can say he’s only started one of the last four, but you can also say he’s started eight, nine, ten or eleven already this season,” Slot told reporters earlier this week.
“We often play three games in seven days with just two days of rest. Coming from a different league — a very good one, but not as intense as the Premier League — that takes adjustment. He’s already had a big impact, even if the goals haven’t come yet.”
Slot added that Wirtz has been “unlucky with the end product,” but praised his creativity and influence in Liverpool’s attacking phases.
“He brings exactly what we expected — a player who creates so much for others. The goals will come. For someone his age, adapting to this pace takes time, but he’s on the right track,” Slot concluded.
