When Florian Wirtz arrived at Anfield last summer in a blockbuster deal worth up to $157 million, Liverpool fans expected instant fireworks from one of Europe’s brightest young talents. The German playmaker made the switch from Bayer Leverkusen amid huge anticipation, taking over the legendary No. 7 shirt left vacant after Luis Díaz’s move to Bayern Munich.
Although Wirtz has yet to open his scoring account for the Reds, his influence has been felt in other ways — providing three assists, including two in the Champions League, and delivering a standout performance against Real Madrid, where he impressed from the left wing.
Despite the lack of goals, Wirtz’s market value continues to climb. According to the CIES Football Observatory, the 22-year-old is now valued at €173 million ($199.8 million) — significantly higher than what Liverpool agreed to pay, even with all potential add-ons included.
Arne Slot’s Defence of Wirtz
Head coach Arne Slot recently addressed Wirtz’s form, urging patience and understanding as the midfielder adapts to the pace of English football.
“You can say he’s started only one of the last four games, but he’s also played eight, nine, ten, or eleven already this season,” Slot told reporters earlier in the week. “We often play three matches in seven days with just two days of rest. For a player coming from another league — even one as strong as the Bundesliga — it takes time to adjust to the intensity of the Premier League.”
Slot insisted that Wirtz has already made an impact in several matches but has been “unlucky” not to have more end product. “He’s created plenty for the team. The goals will come, but it’s natural that young players need time to adapt when facing this kind of schedule.”
The Liverpool boss also pointed to the example of Ryan Gravenberch, who took time to find his rhythm after joining from Bayern Munich last season. “It took him a while to adjust to the intensity — maybe even longer than it will take Florian,” Slot added.
