After Manchester City’s commanding 3–0 victory over Liverpool, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane offered a surprising take on which member of Pep Guardiola’s squad has rediscovered their spark — and it wasn’t Phil Foden.
With England manager Thomas Tuchel preparing his squad for the 2026 World Cup, much attention has recently turned to Foden, whose performances have mirrored the brilliance that made him one of England’s most promising young talents. The 24-year-old was once again influential in City’s dominant win at the Etihad, but according to Keane, another figure at the club has truly reignited their fire.
City’s victory over Liverpool, fueled by goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku, reaffirmed their status as serious contenders in the Premier League title race. Although Arsenal have established an early lead at the top of the table, Guardiola’s side remain firmly in pursuit, with many believing they could yet reclaim their crown.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Keane explained that while Foden and Doku impressed, it was Guardiola himself who appeared rejuvenated.
“If you’d asked Pep six or seven weeks ago, he might have felt it was a rebuilding job,” Keane said. “But you can see it now — he’s got that spark back. It’s in his eyes. He probably feels the players have surprised him a bit. They’ve flown under the radar, the new goalkeeper’s been a great signing, Haaland’s scoring for fun, and Foden looks back to his best.”
The former midfielder, who won seven Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, added that Guardiola now looks fully re-energized and ready for another title challenge.
“Four or five weeks ago, I bet Pep thought this season might be a bit too much and they’d have to wait until the summer to rebuild,” Keane continued. “But they’re definitely back in the mix now. And if he goes on to win this title, finishing ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal, it would be one of his greatest achievements.”
Despite Arsenal holding a four-point advantage after 11 games, Keane’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that City are far from finished. Guardiola, known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, appears revitalized — and with international breaks offering time to reset, City’s next Premier League test will come against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
With Guardiola’s managerial record already among the most decorated in world football, another Premier League title would further cement his place in history — and, as Roy Keane suggests, perhaps prove that even after years of dominance, Pep Guardiola has indeed “got his spark back.”
