Liverpool have reportedly been informed that there is only one realistic route to signing Bayern Munich’s rising star Michael Olise as a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah.
The club entered the current season as Europe’s biggest spenders, committing more than £400 million to a sweeping squad rebuild. Their investment followed a dominant Premier League title win, during which they broke the British transfer record twice to bring in Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Additional reinforcements included Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni, although a late move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi fell through on deadline day.
These arrivals were intended to replace high-profile departures such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah. However, despite this heavy spending, Arne Slot’s side have endured a difficult campaign. Liverpool have lost seven of their last ten matches in all competitions and dropped from first to eighth in the Premier League table, with several key players failing to hit form.
With the 2026 transfer window approaching, Liverpool are expected to strengthen once again, and finding a successor for Salah has become a major priority. Reports earlier in the week suggested the club were preparing a record-breaking bid of around €200 million for Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise. Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to TEAMtalk, cast doubt on the likelihood of such a move.
Jones stated that Olise is not a realistic target at present, adding that Bayern Munich have no intention of selling. He explained that the only scenario in which negotiations might open would be if Olise became unhappy and pushed for the transfer, but there is currently no indication of that. Instead, the player is said to be thriving in Munich and embracing the challenge.
Liverpool are also expected to pursue defensive reinforcements and remain keen on Marc Guehi. Former Premier League chief executive Keith Wyness claimed that Guehi is interested in a move to Anfield, although competition is expected to be fierce when the window opens. Wyness noted that Liverpool are encouraging the player to be patient while the club attempts to navigate the financial demands of the deal. He also warned that Real Madrid remain strong contenders in the race.
Overall, Liverpool face a challenging path if they hope to secure top targets such as Olise and Guehi, with both deals expected to be complex and highly competitive as the 2026 window approaches
