Liverpool may have to fend off some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, to secure one of their top transfer targets.
After a busy summer window that saw Arne Slot’s side bring in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, the Reds have struggled to hit top form early in the season. A 3-0 defeat to Manchester City before the international break has left Liverpool eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, adding pressure on their squad and transfer strategy.
One player Liverpool remain keen on is Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace captain. The club missed out on signing him during the summer window, but sources suggest the Englishman is still very much on their radar.
Everton’s former CEO Keith Wyness, who now advises elite clubs through his consultancy, believes Real Madrid could enter the fray. Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness highlighted that the Spanish giants have a strong interest in Guehi, though the defender reportedly still wants a move to Liverpool.
“From what I understand, he’d like to go to Liverpool. But there’ll be an auction for him. He’s going to be a sought-after player in January,” Wyness said. “I think Liverpool are saying, ‘hang on, just moderate your demands and we’ll take you.’ I don’t think they’re going to pull out. He’s a quality player even though he’s injured at the moment. I don’t think Real Madrid are out of the running by any means, though. There’s still big interest there.”
