With more than two months having passed since the first edition, there is now enough evidence to reassess the top performers across Europe.
The criteria remain consistent: individual statistics and performances, influence on team results, and the level of media attention surrounding each player. While subjectivity is unavoidable, these factors together help paint a clearer picture of who is truly shaping the season so far.
15. Mikel Merino, Arsenal
Arsenal’s strong campaign has been built on collective excellence rather than individual stardom, which makes highlighting standout performers a challenge. Still, Mikel Merino deserves recognition. The Spaniard has proven to be one of the most versatile midfielders in the league, comfortably adapting to multiple roles.
Under Mikel Arteta, Merino has even been deployed as an emergency centre-forward, particularly during Gyökeres’ injury spell. In five of his last six appearances, he started up front and delivered two goals and one assist. His consistency extends beyond club football, with similarly solid performances for Spain, reinforcing his growing importance.
14. Arda Güler, Real Madrid
Güler drops significantly from the previous rankings but manages to remain inside the top 15. His early-season partnership with Kylian Mbappé was electric, but since October his form has dipped noticeably.
He has struggled in high-profile matches, appeared affected by growing criticism, and has become less central to Xabi Alonso’s plans. Jude Bellingham’s return from injury has further complicated matters, as Alonso is still searching for the right balance to accommodate both players. As a result, Güler has looked less assertive and has often been substituted early.
13. Luis Díaz, Bayern Munich
Luis Díaz’s transition to Bayern Munich has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season. Far from being overshadowed by Harry Kane or Michael Olise, the Colombian has forced himself into the spotlight with decisive contributions.
With 12 goals and seven assists in 21 matches, Díaz has become a key part of Bayern’s attacking machine. His directness, work rate, and improved end product have made him one of the Bundesliga’s most impactful forwards this season.
12. Julián Álvarez, Atlético Madrid
Álvarez has not suffered a dramatic decline, but his recent output has fallen short of the explosive standards he set early in the campaign. Over his last seven matches, he has recorded just two goal contributions.
Atlético’s recent struggles in La Liga have also affected his ranking, with the club slipping behind several rivals. Despite remaining the team’s attacking reference point, Diego Simeone will be hoping to rediscover the ruthless version of Álvarez seen in September.
11. Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool
Szoboszlai’s slight drop reflects Liverpool’s broader difficulties rather than any dip in his own performances. In fact, he has arguably been Liverpool’s most reliable and committed player throughout the campaign.
His versatility has once again been evident, shifting roles as the team’s needs demand. Recently, he has operated on the right side of attack, contributing crucial goals, including a winner from the penalty spot in the Champions League. Szoboszlai continues to lead by example as Liverpool search for stability.
10. Álvaro Carreras, Real Madrid
Despite Real Madrid’s inconsistent form, Álvaro Carreras has emerged as one of the season’s revelations. Signed for a substantial fee, he has justified the investment with mature and composed performances.
Capable of contributing both defensively and offensively, Carreras has impressed with his tactical intelligence and adaptability. One of his standout moments came in El Clásico, where he effectively neutralised Lamine Yamal. Even more impressively, that display was not even his peak performance this season.
9. Declan Rice, Arsenal
Declan Rice continues to prove why he belongs among the elite midfielders in world football. While Arsenal’s system prioritises collective balance, Rice’s consistency over time sets him apart.
As a box-to-box midfielder, his blend of defensive solidity, leadership, and attacking contribution makes him invaluable. His inclusion in the top tier of global players is fully justified based on sustained excellence rather than short-term form.
8. Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain
After leading the rankings earlier in the season, Mendes has gradually slid down. Playing at full-back makes it difficult to consistently dominate headlines, and recent months have been quieter for the Portuguese defender.
Minor injuries and PSG’s uneven performances have limited his opportunities to shine on the biggest stage. Nonetheless, alongside Carreras, he remains one of the most exciting full-backs in Europe.
7. Michael Olise, Bayern Munich
While several players have cooled off after strong starts, Olise has maintained elite output throughout the campaign. Averaging a goal contribution per game, his influence on Bayern’s attacking play is undeniable.
With 12 goals and 16 assists already, Olise continues to thrive in a team that is firing on all cylinders. His consistency and creativity make him a constant threat.
6. Lamine Yamal, Barcelona
Yamal’s rise is one of the most compelling narratives of the season. After an injury-hit start, off-field distractions, and a difficult outing against Real Madrid, the young winger has responded in emphatic fashion.
Over the last nine matches, he has delivered five goals and five assists, playing a major role in Barcelona’s surge at the top of La Liga. While he has not yet reached the breathtaking levels of last season, his upward trajectory suggests the best is still to come.
5. Pedri, Barcelona
Pedri’s importance to Barcelona cannot be overstated. When he is absent, the difference in the team’s performance is immediately noticeable. Over the course of the season, his influence has arguably exceeded that of Yamal.
However, a muscle injury earlier in the campaign disrupted his rhythm, allowing Vitinha to edge ahead in the rankings. Even so, Pedri remains one of the most complete midfielders in world football.
4. Vitinha, Paris Saint-Germain
Choosing between Vitinha and Pedri is a fine margin, but current form gives the advantage to the PSG midfielder. Free from injury and delivering consistently high-level performances, Vitinha has been central to PSG’s play.
His hat-trick against Tottenham in the Champions League was a standout moment, underlining his growing authority and technical brilliance.
3. Erling Haaland, Manchester City
Haaland remains a goal-scoring phenomenon. With 21 goals already this season, his impact on Manchester City is staggering, especially when compared to his teammates’ output.
While his overall brilliance may trail the top two slightly, his efficiency and physical dominance ensure he remains firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation.
2. Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid
Mbappé’s individual numbers remain impressive, but Real Madrid’s collective struggles have prevented him from taking top spot. Injuries and missed opportunities have slowed his momentum, though he continues to rescue his team in difficult moments.
Despite this, the competition at the very top is fierce, and one player currently stands above the rest.
1. Harry Kane, Bayern Munich
Harry Kane emerges as the current leader in the 2026 Ballon d’Or race. Bayern Munich look like genuine contenders for major trophies, and Kane’s role in that success has been decisive.
With 31 goals and four assists already, his efficiency has been extraordinary. Kane himself has acknowledged that winning major competitions is essential for individual recognition, and Bayern’s early-season form suggests those ambitions are realistic. As things stand, he is the frontrunner heading into the second half of the campaign
