In a bold and controversial statement, former Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski has called for Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick to be sacked if the team fails to win the UEFA Champions League this season. Tomaszewski, who has been critical of Flick’s management, argues that the German coach has failed to bring out the best in a squad he believes is truly talented.
“Flick simply doesn’t fit this team,” Tomaszewski declared. “He has turned the players into a diminished version of themselves, even though Barcelona has a truly great squad.” His criticism comes after a series of disappointing performances, including a tense and uninspiring 3–2 win over Slavia Prague, which left many questioning Barcelona’s current trajectory.
Tomaszewski’s frustration with Flick’s tactics is rooted in what he perceives as a lack of effective leadership. He believes the players are underperforming and playing far below their true potential, stating, “The players are simply exhausted. Flick tries to act brave after a poor match, like the one in Prague, but I see, unfortunately, that the players are only playing at 40% to 50% of their true potential.” This statement underlines Tomaszewski’s concern that Barcelona’s squad is not living up to expectations despite having the quality to challenge for titles.
Furthermore, Tomaszewski points to the club’s injury crisis as evidence of a deeper problem. “Nine players have suffered injuries—not from direct contact on the pitch, but because they are no longer physically capable of keeping up with the team.” The injuries, many of which have kept key players sidelined for significant stretches, have added to the mounting pressure on Flick, whose methods have been questioned throughout the season.
The former goalkeeper’s comments suggest a growing divide between the coach’s vision and the players’ ability to execute it.
