Arsenal are reportedly planning another major midfield reinforcement this summer, with Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães emerging as a key target strongly supported by manager Mikel Arteta.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arteta is not just interested in the Brazilian midfielder—he is actively pushing internally for the club to pursue the deal. Arsenal are believed to view Guimarães as a “world-class” addition who could elevate their already strong squad.
Arsenal’s motivation and squad context
Arsenal recently secured a Premier League title, finishing ahead of Manchester City, and also reached the latter stages of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup, where they were beaten by elite opposition. Despite this success, Arteta is still aiming to strengthen the squad further to maintain competitiveness at the very top level.
Midfield has been a particular focus area. Players like Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, and Mikel Merino provided depth and rotation options across the season, but reports suggest Arteta wants a more dominant, high-impact midfield profile to raise the overall level.
The Bruno Guimarães situation
Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães, a Brazilian international known for his creativity, pressing ability, and ball progression, has become Arsenal’s preferred target. He is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders and has also been influential for Brazil in international competitions.
Arsenal reportedly had an earlier offer of around £55 million rejected, and there are suggestions they could return with an improved bid closer to £60 million. However, Newcastle are currently reluctant to sell, especially after already parting ways with other key players in recent transfer cycles.
Romano’s update on the transfer
Fabrizio Romano explained that while Arsenal’s interest is real and strongly driven by Mikel Arteta, the deal is expected to be very difficult.
He noted that Newcastle have made it clear internally that they want to keep Guimarães and are not planning to weaken their midfield further. Even though Arsenal have the financial capacity to improve their offer, convincing Newcastle to sell would require a significantly high bid and strong negotiation.
