Manchester United’s hopes of signing Lewis Hall have suffered a significant setback after respected journalist David Ornstein revealed that he does not expect the Newcastle United defender to make the move to Old Trafford this summer. According to Ornstein, while there is genuine admiration for Hall within United, Newcastle are determined to keep hold of one of their brightest young stars and have little intention of letting him leave.
Hall has been widely linked with United as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen the left-back position. The 21-year-old is viewed as an ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw thanks to his pace, technical quality, and ability to contribute in both defence and attack. However, Newcastle’s firm stance, coupled with Hall’s long-term contract, means any deal would be extremely difficult to complete. Reports suggest United would even be prepared to pay around £60 million, but Newcastle are still reluctant to sell.
With Hall now looking increasingly out of reach, INEOS may be forced to accelerate plans for alternative targets. Reports have already linked Fulham’s Antonee Robinson as a possible backup option should negotiations with Newcastle fail to progress. Carrick is expected to prioritise a new left-back, especially with Patrick Dorgu increasingly being used further forward and Luke Shaw needing reliable competition.
While transfers can change quickly, Ornstein’s update is one of the clearest indications yet that Lewis Hall is unlikely to become a Manchester United player this summer unless Newcastle dramatically change their position.
