Manchester United’s reported £35 million signing of Youri Tielemans has already sparked comparisons with Arsenal’s £75 million move for Bruno Guimarães. While Bruno is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s top midfielders, many United supporters believe INEOS have secured the better value by bringing in an experienced, proven performer for less than half the price.
Tielemans arrives with an outstanding résumé. The Belgian midfielder helped Aston Villa lift the Europa League, scoring in the final, and captained Belgium during their run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. His passing range, composure under pressure, tactical intelligence and ability to dictate the tempo make him an ideal fit for Michael Carrick’s possession-based style.
Bruno Guimarães is an exceptional all-round midfielder and has been one of Newcastle United’s standout players, which helps explain why Arsenal were willing to pay around £75 million to sign him. However, there is a reasonable argument that Tielemans represents far better value financially if he delivers the level of performance Manchester United expect.
Whether Tielemans is “clearly the better player” is ultimately a matter of opinion rather than fact. Both midfielders have different strengths and could succeed in different tactical systems. What is easier to support is the claim that, if Tielemans performs at a high level, INEOS may have pulled off one of the bargains of the summer by strengthening United’s midfield for a significantly lower fee.
🔥 What do you think? Did Manchester United land the smarter deal with Youri Tielemans, or would you still have preferred Bruno Guimarães despite the much higher transfer fee?
