Bruno Fernandes Set For An Emotional Sporting CP Reunion In The Champions League

Bruno Fernandes has spoken about one of the most emotionally charged fixtures awaiting Manchester United in this season’s Champions League, and his words perfectly capture just how special the occasion will be.

The United captain is preparing to return to Lisbon to face Sporting CP, the club where he established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting midfielders before moving to Old Trafford in January 2020. Sporting have confirmed Manchester United as one of their Champions League opponents, with the meeting at the José Alvalade Stadium scheduled for November 25.

Fernandes admitted that he was genuinely delighted when he discovered that United would be drawn against his former club. However, there is an emotional side to the fixture that makes it far more complicated than an ordinary Champions League match.

“I’m very happy. I was really happy when I saw that I’m going back to play there and face them.

“But obviously, it’s a mixed feeling because I have a great history there.”

For Fernandes, this will be a completely different kind of return.

He spent more than two years at Sporting between 2017 and 2020, becoming a hugely influential figure for the Portuguese giants before earning his move to Manchester United. Sporting themselves have previously highlighted the affection Fernandes continued to have for the club after his departure, with the midfielder returning to visit his former teammates and staff shortly after joining United.

Now, years later, he will walk back into the José Alvalade Stadium wearing the Manchester United captain’s armband and preparing to lead the Red Devils against the club where his European reputation exploded.

That is the part that makes this fixture so fascinating.

Fernandes will undoubtedly want United to win, but the memories of his Sporting years will make the occasion incredibly personal. He knows the stadium, knows the supporters and knows exactly what the club means to him.

At the same time, this is Manchester United’s return to the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League last season. Fernandes has become one of the central figures in United’s resurgence and enters the new campaign as captain after a remarkable 2025/26 season in which he broke the Premier League assist record and collected major individual honours.

So when the Portuguese international steps onto that pitch in November, it will not simply be Bruno Fernandes versus Sporting CP.

It will be the former Sporting star returning home as Manchester United’s leader.

And that could make for one of the most emotional Champions League nights of his career.
