IS THIS A GOOD REPLACEMENT

The debate surrounding Manchester United’s left side has taken another interesting turn.

With Marcus Rashford back at Old Trafford after his spells away from the club, the question of who should ultimately occupy the left-wing role remains fascinating. And one name that continues to generate plenty of discussion is Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu has already shown that he can operate further forward. Michael Carrick has used the Dane as a left winger, despite United originally signing him primarily as a wing-back. The club’s own profile describes him as a versatile player capable of operating in several positions.

That versatility is a major advantage, but replacing Rashford is an entirely different challenge.

Rashford brings explosive acceleration, experience, goals, one-on-one ability and a proven record of producing decisive moments. His recent return has also immediately added another dimension to United’s attack, with Carrick using him from the left in a front four alongside Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Dorgu, meanwhile, offers something different.

He is younger, extremely physical and capable of making powerful runs from deep or from a higher starting position. His ability to play both defensively and offensively gives Carrick tactical flexibility that Rashford simply does not provide.

But that does not automatically make him Rashford’s replacement.

In fact, recent tactical analysis suggests Dorgu’s biggest value may come from his versatility rather than being asked to completely replicate Rashford’s role. United did not sign a senior left-back during the summer, leaving Luke Shaw as the only recognised senior option in that position. That potentially makes Dorgu an important solution at the back as well as further forward.

And that is where the debate becomes complicated.

Could Dorgu eventually become United’s long-term left winger?

Absolutely.

Has he done enough to prove that he can immediately replace Rashford as the team’s primary attacking threat from that side?

That is a much bigger question.

Dorgu’s recent performances have shown flashes of attacking quality, but he is still developing his decision-making and final-third consistency. During United’s defeat to Hull, for example, he started on the left before Rashford replaced him at half-time.

There is also an argument that Dorgu could actually benefit from Rashford being around.

Instead of replacing him immediately, Carrick could use both players strategically. Rashford could provide the goals and creativity from the left, while Dorgu could rotate between winger and full-back depending on the opponent and game situation.

That would give United something extremely valuable: tactical unpredictability.

So, is Patrick Dorgu the right replacement for Marcus Rashford?

At this moment, probably not as a direct replacement.

But as a long-term project, there is certainly something there.

Dorgu has the physical tools, versatility and attacking potential to become a major player for United. What he needs now is consistency, experience and time.

The real question for United fans is whether Carrick should continue developing Dorgu as an attacker or eventually move him back towards his more natural defensive role.

That debate could become one of the most interesting tactical storylines at Old Trafford this season.

So, Manchester United fans, would you trust Patrick Dorgu to eventually take Rashford’s place on the left?
