🚨 Leny Yoro: £52M Masterstroke or Manchester United’s Next Big Development Failure? 😳🔴

Manchester United fans have every right to be frustrated with the Leny Yoro situation. 😤

The French defender arrived at Old Trafford in July 2024 as one of the most exciting young centre-backs in European football. United paid an initial £52.2 million, with another £8 million reportedly available in add-ons.

At the time, the message was crystal clear: Yoro was a long-term project. United believed they had beaten serious competition for a teenager who could eventually become one of the best defenders in the world.

And Yoro himself revealed that United had presented him with a clear development plan before he signed.

So why are supporters now asking whether that plan is actually working? 👀

😤 THE BENCHING HAS BECOME A TALKING POINT

Yoro is still just 20 years old, having been born in November 2005.

That is incredibly young for a centre-back at a club carrying the expectations of Manchester United.

But the concern isn’t simply that he’s young.

It’s that United invested heavily in his potential, yet his current involvement has raised eyebrows.

At the beginning of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, Yoro has made just two appearances and 24 minutes across the opening three league matches, according to FBref.

That’s hardly the consistent run of football you’d expect if the club’s priority is accelerating the development of a £50m-plus young defender. 👀

🧠 BUT LET’S NOT CALL HIM A FLOP YET

This is where the conversation needs some balance.

Yoro wasn’t signed because Manchester United believed he was already the finished product.

He had only just turned 18 when he arrived from Lille, despite already having significant first-team experience. He had made 60 appearances for Lille and had been selected in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season before moving to England.

That’s a phenomenal foundation.

But centre-back is one of the hardest positions for a young player to master.

Positioning.

Decision-making.

Reading danger.

Defending crosses.

Managing physical forwards.

Organising the defensive line.

Knowing when to step forward and when to drop.

Those things come with experience.

And Yoro is still accumulating that experience. 🔥

🚨 THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ISN’T YORO… IT’S THE PLAN

This is where Manchester United should be questioned.

If the club genuinely believes Yoro can become a defensive cornerstone, then what exactly is the pathway to getting him there?

You can’t simply spend a fortune on a teenage defender, put enormous expectations on his shoulders and then expect everything to magically work out.

Young defenders need consistency.

They need coaching.

They need experienced partners.

They need managers who trust them.

And perhaps most importantly, they need permission to make mistakes without being written off after one bad performance.

United themselves said when signing Yoro that their aim was to provide him with the guidance, time and patience required for him to reach his potential.

That promise now needs to be backed up on the pitch.

😬 AND THAT EVERTON GAME DIDN’T HELP

United’s defensive problems were exposed again in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Everton.

The match ended with Ainsley Maitland-Niles scoring a stoppage-time equaliser, while Yoro was among the defenders criticised in the sequence leading to the goal.

But here’s the important part:

One mistake doesn’t erase his potential.

If anything, moments like this demonstrate why Yoro needs regular coaching and match experience rather than being judged solely on whether he looks like a £70m defender every time he steps onto the pitch.

💰 WAS £70M TOO MUCH?

That’s another debate entirely.

The commonly reported deal was £52.2m upfront plus up to £8m in add-ons, rather than a guaranteed £70m fee.

Still expensive?

Absolutely.

But the transfer market has changed dramatically, and clubs are increasingly paying enormous sums for young players with elite potential.

The real question isn’t whether United overpaid by a few million.

The real question is whether they can turn that potential into elite-level performance.

🔥 YORO HAS SOMETHING YOU CAN’T COACH

There are reasons United were so desperate to sign him.

His size.

His speed.

His composure.

His ability to defend space.

His technical quality.

His ceiling.

Those qualities made him one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe.

And United reportedly won the race despite strong interest from Real Madrid.

That tells you how highly the football world rated him.

So throwing the “flop” label at him at 20 would be ridiculous.

👀 BUT UNITED CANNOT AFFORD TO GET THIS WRONG

This is the part that should worry supporters.

Manchester United have spent years watching promising young players struggle to fulfil their potential.

Yoro cannot become another example of a talented youngster arriving at Old Trafford with huge expectations, losing confidence, bouncing in and out of the team and eventually becoming another “what could have been” story.

The club needs to be smarter.

Give him a defined role.

Give him consistent minutes.

Pair him with experienced defenders.

Work relentlessly on his positioning and concentration.

And allow him to grow.

Because if United really believe Yoro can become the defender they thought they were buying, they have to invest in his development just as heavily as they invested in his transfer fee. 🔴🔥

🗣️ SO, ARE UNITED WASTING LENY YORO?

Not yet.

But they could be heading toward a serious problem if his development isn’t handled properly.

Yoro isn’t supposed to be the finished product at 20.

He’s supposed to be the player who eventually becomes the finished product.

And that’s exactly why Manchester United need to be patient without being passive.

The talent is still there. The potential is still enormous. The question now is whether United can build the right environment for him to unlock it. 👀

Because £52m was spent on Leny Yoro’s future, not simply his present.

And if that future is going to be world-class, Manchester United have to start treating his development like a priority. 🔴💎
