Four Years Later, Manchester United Are Still Trusting the Same Back Four 😳🔴

Manchester United’s defensive rebuild has somehow come full circle… and fans have every right to be asking questions. 👀🔴

Four years after Erik ten Hag sent out Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez and Luke Shaw as his starting back four against Brighton, that same defensive quartet remains relevant at Old Trafford.

And here is the crazy part: United have spent around £219.7 million on eight defenders since the summer of 2022, yet Michael Carrick has repeatedly returned to the same four players. 😳💰

This isn’t simply a story about four defenders surviving multiple seasons. It is a story about injuries, managerial changes, expensive recruitment, tactical experiments and, perhaps most importantly, United still struggling to find a defensive unit they can genuinely trust.

🧱 DALOT: THE SURVIVOR

Diogo Dalot has somehow outlasted almost every defensive experiment United have attempted.

He has played under different managers, competed with different full-backs and seen several defenders arrive at the club, yet he continues to find himself in the conversation for a starting position.

His versatility has undoubtedly helped. But after four years, the question is no longer whether Dalot can do a job.

Is he actually good enough to be the long-term first-choice full-back for a Manchester United team that wants to challenge for major trophies? 🤔

💪 MAGUIRE: FROM CAPTAIN TO COMEBACK KING

Harry Maguire’s United career has been one of the strangest transformations at Old Trafford.

Once the world’s most expensive defender, heavily criticised and eventually stripped of the captaincy, Maguire has gradually rebuilt his reputation.

He has survived multiple managers and continues to offer experience, aerial strength and leadership.

But at 33, United cannot realistically pretend he is the future of the defence.

Useful veteran? Absolutely. Long-term defensive solution? That’s another conversation. 👀

🇦🇷 MARTÍNEZ: THE BIGGEST “WHAT IF?”

When Lisandro Martínez arrived from Ajax, he immediately changed the energy of United’s defence.

Aggressive, technically comfortable and fearless in duels, the Argentine quickly became a fan favourite.

But injuries have seriously disrupted his progress. A foot injury kept him out for a large part of the 2023/24 season, while an ACL injury suffered in 2025 forced him into another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

When fully fit, Martínez can still bring qualities United desperately need.

But can United build their entire defensive structure around a player whose availability has been so inconsistent? 🤕

🚑 SHAW: THE PERMANENT FITNESS QUESTION

Luke Shaw is perhaps the most frustrating case of them all.

Nobody seriously questions his ability when he is fit. The problem has always been getting him onto the pitch consistently.

His injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rhythm, forcing United to find temporary solutions at left-back.

And that creates the uncomfortable reality: having a quality player isn’t enough if you cannot reliably select him.

😳 THE MOST EMBARRASSING PART?

The quartet haven’t actually played together continuously for four years.

In fact, Sky Sports reports that Dalot, Maguire, Martínez and Shaw have started together only 10 times across those four years.

So the real story isn’t that United have stubbornly used the same four defenders every week.

It’s that four years and hundreds of millions of pounds later, those same four names can still be considered United’s strongest defensive combination.

And that is where the criticism becomes unavoidable. 🔥

United brought in Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu, among others, hoping to reshape the defence.

Yet Carrick repeatedly went back to the old guard. Remarkably, the Martinez-Maguire-Shaw-Dalot combination was used six times in his first 17 Premier League games last season, with United unbeaten in those matches.

That statistic makes the situation even more complicated.

Maybe the old back four isn’t being selected because United have no alternatives.

Maybe, when everyone is fit, the old four genuinely still give the manager the best balance. 🤯

But then comes the other side of the argument…

United’s defensive problems haven’t magically disappeared.

The recent 2–2 draw with Everton, where United conceded a stoppage-time equaliser after twice taking the lead, once again exposed concerns about defensive organisation and game management.

And reports following the match have highlighted the growing concern surrounding United’s defensive record.

So here we are.

2022: Dalot 🔴 Maguire 🧱 Martínez 🇦🇷 Shaw 🚑

2026: Dalot 🔴 Maguire 🧱 Martínez 🇦🇷 Shaw 🚑

Four years.

Millions spent.

Multiple managers.

Multiple defensive signings.

Different tactical systems.

And somehow… the same names keep coming back. 😭😂

The real question isn’t whether these four defenders have quality.

The question is whether Manchester United can realistically build a title-winning defence around them in 2026.

Because if the club genuinely wants to compete with Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Europe’s elite, nostalgia won’t be enough.

United need a defence that is not only talented, but consistently available, physically reliable, tactically stable and capable of protecting leads when the pressure arrives. 🔥

So, Red Devils, let’s settle this once and for all 👇

🔴 Dalot: Keep or replace?

🧱 Maguire: Still good enough for United?

🇦🇷 Martínez: World-class when fit or no longer untouchable?

🚑 Shaw: Quality player or too unreliable?

And most importantly…

If you had £200M to completely rebuild Manchester United’s defence tomorrow, which FOUR defenders would you bring in? 👀🔥
