The Azerbaijani champions have already demonstrated during their remarkable Champions League qualifying run that they can be aggressive, adventurous and extremely dangerous in the final third.
Sabah have used different tactical shapes during their European campaign, including 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3, while their attacking approach has often involved stretching opponents with width and repeatedly delivering balls into the penalty area.
Their numbers against Hapoel Be’er Sheva should immediately command respect. In the second leg of their Champions League play-off, Sabah produced a staggering 33 shots before eventually winning 5-2 after extra time and progressing 6-4 on aggregate. 🤯🔥
That is not the profile of a team arriving at Old Trafford with the sole intention of parking the bus.
Sabah have also continued their strong form domestically, beating Zira 5-0 in their most recent league fixture. Their European journey has already taken them through four qualifying rounds, making Thursday’s encounter the biggest night in the club’s young history.
Michael Carrick therefore has to take this game seriously.
United need to control the tempo from the opening whistle.
Keep possession.
Move the ball quickly.
Attack the spaces behind Sabah’s full-backs.
Press aggressively when they attempt to build from the back.
And, most importantly, score early. ⚽️🔥
There is another factor Carrick must consider, though.
The Manchester derby is waiting on Sunday. 👀🔴🔵
United cannot afford to treat the Champions League opener as a game where every established starter must play the full 90 minutes. The ideal scenario would be to build a comfortable lead before the hour mark and then protect the most important players.
Benjamin Šeško should be given another opportunity to lead the attack and continue building confidence. The Slovenian has already shown his ability to make an impact, scoring United’s second goal against Everton before the late equaliser denied Carrick’s side all three points.
Patrick Dorgu should also be given a proper run at left-back, while Andrey Santos could benefit from valuable Champions League minutes.
Bruno Fernandes does not necessarily need to play every minute.
Kobbie Mainoo does not need to be pushed unnecessarily.
Luke Shaw should be managed carefully.
And Bryan Mbeumo, who has become an important attacking outlet, should also be protected if United establish control.
The situation surrounding Marcus Rashford deserves particular attention too. Carrick has already indicated that the knock which forced Rashford off against Everton was nothing major, but there is absolutely no reason to take unnecessary risks with the Manchester derby approaching.
This is where squad management becomes crucial.
United need the three points.
They need a positive Champions League start.
But they also need their best players fresh for Manchester City.
Sabah deserve respect, but United should still have enough quality to impose themselves.
Control the game. Score early. Kill the contest. Rotate intelligently. Protect the stars.
That should be the mission at Old Trafford. 🔴🔥
The Champions League is back at the Theatre of Dreams, and Carrick has the perfect opportunity to make a statement.
But with the Manchester derby only days away, the smartest victory could be one achieved without unnecessary damage. 👀🏆
