Liverpool didn’t spend around £26 million plus add-ons on Giovanni Leoni simply because they liked what they saw at Parma.
The Reds saw something much bigger.
They saw a teenage centre-back with the physical profile, maturity and potential to become a major figure in Liverpool’s defence for years to come. 👀🔴
When Liverpool completed Leoni’s signing from Parma in August 2025, he was only 18 years old, yet he had already experienced senior football in Italy with Padova, Sampdoria and Parma. During his breakthrough Serie A campaign with Parma, he made 17 appearances and scored once.
That is an extraordinary development curve for a defender so young.
Standing around 6ft 4in, Leoni immediately brings an imposing presence to the heart of the defence. But his appeal isn’t simply his size.
He is comfortable with the ball, has already accumulated senior experience and has represented Italy at youth international level. Liverpool described him as an intelligent, smart and technical defender when he arrived at Anfield.

Liverpool handed him the famous No.15 shirt, a number he chose because it was the shirt he wore when he made his professional debut.
But his Liverpool journey immediately became complicated.
Leoni made his competitive debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup in September 2025, starting at centre-back and playing 80 minutes in a 2-1 victory. Unfortunately, disaster struck when he suffered an ACL injury during that match.

Instead of spending his first full season fighting for a place in the Liverpool defence, Leoni was forced into a long rehabilitation programme.
For a teenager who had just arrived from Italy and was desperate to prove himself in England, it was a brutal interruption.
But Leoni refused to let it define his story.
By August 2026, the young defender was able to speak positively about his recovery, saying he could finally see the “light at the end of the tunnel.” Footage from Liverpool’s training ground also provided encouragement that his rehabilitation was progressing.

Liverpool still have enormous faith in him.
His long-term contract runs until 2031, showing that the club views him as a significant part of its future rather than a short-term investment.
And Liverpool’s current defensive options make his eventual return particularly intriguing.

And his early debut showed that he was ready to compete at senior level before injury cruelly interrupted his progress.
