When Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Manchester United had just won their 20th league title and were still the dominant force in English football. Since then, the club’s search for a new era of dominance has become one of the biggest stories in the Premier League.
David Moyes came in… then Louis van Gaal… José Mourinho… Ole Gunnar Solskjær… Ralf Rangnick… Erik ten Hag… Rúben Amorim… and eventually Michael Carrick took charge permanently in 2026. Along the way, there were also caretaker spells involving Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Darren Fletcher.
And despite all those changes, the Premier League trophy has never returned to Old Trafford since Ferguson left. 😭🏆❌
The closest United came was under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Mourinho took United to second place in 2017/18 with 81 points, still the club’s highest league finish since Ferguson’s departure at that point.
There have been trophies along the way too. 🏆🔥 Mourinho delivered the League Cup and Europa League in his first season, while Erik ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in 2023. But the biggest prize in England has continued to escape them.
Meanwhile, the Premier League landscape has completely changed. Manchester City have built a sustained era of success under Pep Guardiola, Liverpool have won the league under Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot, and Arsenal ended their own long wait by winning the 2025/26 Premier League title under Mikel Arteta.
That makes United’s wait even more painful. 😳🔴
13 years since Ferguson.
Multiple permanent managers.
Several caretaker bosses.
Millions spent on transfers.
Plenty of big-name signings.
But still NO Premier League title. 😤🏆❌
So the big question remains…
Was the problem the constant change in managers? 🤔
Was recruitment the biggest issue? 💰
Did United fail to build a consistent long-term football project? 🔄
Or has the club simply struggled to keep up with the standards set by City, Liverpool and now Arsenal? 👀🔥
UNITED FANS, WHAT DO YOU THINK REALLY WENT WRONG AFTER SIR ALEX FERGUSON LEFT? 👇🔴😳
