Patrick Dorgu has been one of those Manchester United players who can frustrate supporters one minute and excite them the next. His lack of composure and occasional questionable decisions have made him an easy target for criticism, but there is another side to his game that deserves serious attention. ⚡️
The 21-year-old brings energy, aggression, pace and attacking urgency to United’s left flank. When Dorgu gets forward, there is a clear desire to push the opposition back and make something happen rather than simply recycle possession.
And the numbers show that he is already contributing. Dorgu has featured in all five of United’s Premier League matches this season, and he registered his first league assist of the campaign in the 1-1 draw with Fulham. Last season, he finished with four goals and four assists in 26 Premier League appearances.
His European performance against Sabah also gave supporters another glimpse of what he can provide. Playing at left-back, Dorgu assisted Matheus Cunha for United’s opening goal and was named Player of the Match, with his attacking contribution particularly noticeable.
There is still plenty to improve, though. 👀
Dorgu is not yet the finished article. His positioning, decision-making and composure can still improve, especially when United are under pressure. Opta’s analysis also notes that he has spent only a relatively small portion of his club career playing as a traditional left-back in a back four.
Then there is Luke Shaw.
At his best, Shaw offers experience, technical quality and defensive reliability. He also had a remarkable 2025/26 campaign, starting all 38 Premier League matches for United after years in which injuries had repeatedly disrupted his availability.
But availability remains an important part of the conversation.
Shaw missed United’s Champions League match against Sabah and the Manchester derby after picking up a knock, although Michael Carrick described the injury as minor and said Shaw was “very close” to returning against City.
Interestingly, Carrick has also publicly backed Dorgu as someone capable of solving United’s left-back problem, while acknowledging that the Dane can play the position despite being used in more attacking roles.
That makes this debate even more intriguing. 🔥
Shaw may have the experience. Dorgu may have the explosiveness.
Shaw offers calmness and a proven record at the position. Dorgu offers youthful intensity, physicality and the willingness to attack from deep.
And with United having entered the season without signing another recognised senior left-back, this battle could become increasingly important as the campaign develops.
So perhaps the question isn’t whether Dorgu is perfect.
He isn’t.
The real question is whether his energy and attacking threat currently give United more from the left than Shaw can provide. 👀🔥
One thing is certain: Dorgu still has plenty to learn, but giving him consistent minutes could be exactly what helps turn those raw qualities into a more complete Premier League left-back. 💪🔴
