Let’s be honest, Manchester United fans have every reason to debate this one. 😮💨
Youri Tielemans is a technically gifted midfielder and United clearly had a plan when they brought him in. The club highlighted his ability to break defensive lines, play progressive passes under pressure and add creativity and experience to the midfield. 🇧🇪🎯
But here’s where the debate gets spicy… 👀🔥
Is Tielemans the right partner for Kobbie Mainoo in a TWO-MAN midfield?
That is a completely different question.
Mainoo has recently re-established himself as an important part of Michael Carrick’s midfield, with his ability to receive the ball under pressure, connect attacks and dictate play from deeper areas becoming increasingly important. Carrick has specifically praised the youngster’s influence when playing deeper.
And yet, when Mainoo and Tielemans are the two deeper midfielders, United can sometimes look vulnerable when possession is lost. 😬
We saw the partnership start against Everton, with Bruno Fernandes playing ahead of them. But the bigger question is what happens when United face a side capable of aggressively attacking the centre of the pitch.
Because neither Mainoo nor Tielemans is a classic defensive midfielder whose primary job is to destroy attacks, cover huge spaces and dominate physical battles. That can become a problem when the midfield is stretched. 💥
The concern became even louder after United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham, where the Reds struggled to establish control in central midfield. Fulham’s Sander Berge and Shea Charles were able to influence the battle, while United’s midfield struggled to provide enough intensity and authority.
And that’s where Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos become VERY interesting. 👀🔥
United spent heavily rebuilding the midfield this summer, bringing in Tielemans, Santos and Baleba. The idea was clearly to give Carrick different profiles and more solutions in the middle of the pitch.
Tielemans gives you passing range, composure and creativity. 🎯
Mainoo gives you press resistance, close control and progression. 🪄
Baleba offers more physicality, ball-winning and defensive coverage. 💪🏾
Santos brings another option for energy, aggression and midfield balance. ⚡
So perhaps the real issue isn’t whether Tielemans is “good enough” for Manchester United.
It is whether Tielemans + Mainoo is the right combination when United need to defend large spaces in a two-man midfield. 🤔
And THAT is where the argument gets interesting.
Against teams sitting deep, their technical quality could be extremely useful. Against opponents who turn the game into a physical midfield battle, United may need a different profile alongside Mainoo.
The midfield battle could ultimately determine whether Carrick’s new United can control games consistently. 🔴⚔️
Tielemans + Mainoo? 🎯
Mainoo + Baleba? 💪🏾
Mainoo + Santos? ⚡
United suddenly have options… but finding the perfect combination could be one of Carrick’s biggest tactical challenges this season. 👀🔥
Manchester United fans, who would YOU start alongside Kobbie Mainoo? 🤔🔴
