Cody Gakpo Injury Blow Hits Liverpool Hard

Liverpool have been handed another worrying injury setback after Cody Gakpo was forced to leave the Netherlands’ match against Serbia with an ankle injury.

Gakpo was substituted after just 17 minutes following a heavy challenge, and he has now withdrawn from the Netherlands squad and returned to Liverpool for further assessment.

The timing could not be worse for Liverpool. Gakpo had started the 2026/27 season in impressive form, producing goals and assists while becoming an important part of the Reds’ attack.

Reports from the Netherlands suggest the injury could keep him out for several weeks, although Liverpool will need further medical assessment before confirming an exact recovery timeline.

And the big concern is what comes next. Liverpool are scheduled to face Manchester City on October 11, meaning Gakpo could now be a major doubt for one of the biggest games on the calendar.

With Alexander Isak also dealing with an injury issue, Liverpool could suddenly find themselves short of options in attack. That could open the door for players such as Bradley Barcola, Victor Munoz and Rio Ngumoha to step up and carry more responsibility.

Liverpool will now be hoping Gakpo’s injury is not as serious as feared and that their in-form forward can return as quickly and safely as possible.

For now, Reds fans can only wait for the full assessment.
