The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid is no longer being fought only on the football pitch

The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid is no longer being fought only on the football pitch. The long-running tension surrounding the Negreira case has now moved into another courtroom chapter, with Barcelona and Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez scheduled to meet in Madrid over statements made by the Madrid president earlier this year. 👀⚖️

Barcelona filed a conciliation claim against Florentino Pérez in June, following comments he made about the Negreira affair. The club argues that several of his public statements were defamatory and has demanded that Pérez retract them. If the dispute is not resolved, Barcelona has indicated that it could proceed with a criminal complaint alleging calumny.

The next major date is 25 November 2026 at 9:40am, when a conciliation hearing is scheduled at a Madrid court. Importantly, Pérez is not legally required to attend the hearing personally.

The dispute comes after Pérez made strong allegations concerning Barcelona and the Negreira case. Barcelona has specifically challenged statements in which he accused the club of corruption, alleged that referees had been enriched and claimed Barcelona had repeatedly benefited from refereeing decisions.

Barça’s position is that such statements crossed the line and damaged the club’s reputation. In its legal action, the Catalan club is seeking clarification and a retraction, including asking Pérez to identify the referees he claims received payments and the specific matches or incidents where the alleged sporting influence supposedly occurred.

But there is a much bigger story behind this.

The Negreira case concerns payments Barcelona made over a number of years to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, who was previously vice-president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees. Prosecutors have investigated whether the payments were intended to influence refereeing, while Barcelona has maintained that the payments were for technical reports and advice concerning referees.

Real Madrid has taken a different position and has been involved in the legal proceedings surrounding the case. In June, the Madrid club also asked UEFA to revive disciplinary proceedings concerning Barcelona, saying it had submitted additional material relating to the matter.

The courtroom confrontation between Laporta and Pérez therefore comes at a time when relations between the two Spanish giants have become increasingly strained.

Laporta has recently said that Barcelona cannot accept what he considers false statements about the club and has called for Real Madrid to retract its accusations. He has also described the current institutional relationship between the two clubs as effectively broken.

🔥 And this is what makes the situation so fascinating for football fans.

For decades, Barcelona vs Real Madrid has represented one of the biggest rivalries in world football. Normally, the biggest battles happen at Camp Nou or the Santiago Bernabéu, with trophies, goals and bragging rights at stake.

This time, however, the arguments are being taken into courtrooms, legal documents and formal proceedings.

The November hearing does not itself determine whether Florentino Pérez is guilty of calumny or whether Barcelona’s allegations will ultimately succeed. It is a conciliation process that takes place before a possible further legal action.

If no agreement is reached, Barcelona has said it could move forward with the corresponding criminal complaint.

That means the football rivalry could be entering another extraordinary chapter. ⚖️🔥

Laporta vs Florentino. Barcelona vs Real Madrid. The next Clásico might not be played on a football pitch at all. 👀🔵🔴⚪
