Favoritism Aside! Rojo vs Bailly: Who Was Manchester United’s Better Defender?

Manchester United fans, it is time to settle another heated debate! Between Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly, who was the better defender during his time at Old Trafford?

Both defenders had the aggression, physical strength and fearless mentality needed to play for Manchester United. However, both also had frustrating injury problems that stopped them from reaching their full potential at the club.

But if we put favoritism aside and judge them on their performances, defensive ability and impact, who really deserves the crown?

Marcos Rojo: The Aggressive Warrior

Rojo was never the type of defender who wanted to make life comfortable for an opponent. The Argentine played with passion, intensity and a willingness to throw himself into challenges.

He could play as a centre-back or left-back, giving his managers different defensive options. When he was fit and confident, Rojo brought aggression and a fighting spirit that many United supporters appreciated.

His strongest period came during the 2016/17 season under José Mourinho, when he became an important part of the defensive setup. He showed that he could handle physical battles and compete against dangerous attackers.

However, Rojo’s aggressive style sometimes made him unpredictable, and injuries repeatedly interrupted his progress.

Eric Bailly: The Powerful Defender With Incredible Potential

Bailly arrived at Manchester United in 2016 with plenty of excitement surrounding him, and he made an immediate impression.

The Ivorian defender possessed outstanding pace, strength and recovery ability. He could make explosive tackles, cover space quickly and use his athleticism to get United out of difficult situations.

At his best, Bailly looked like a defender capable of becoming a top-class centre-back. His performances during his first season, when United won the Europa League and League Cup, gave supporters plenty of reasons to believe in him.

But there was one major problem: consistency.

Injuries regularly disrupted Bailly’s progress, while occasional rash decisions made it difficult for him to establish himself as a reliable first-choice defender. His talent was obvious, but United rarely got to see it consistently over a long period.

What Do Their Manchester United Records Say?

Across their Premier League careers at United, Rojo made 73 appearances, while Bailly made 70. Those numbers show just how closely matched they were in terms of league appearances.

The statistics cannot tell the whole story, though. Rojo offered versatility and aggression, while Bailly brought exceptional athleticism and recovery speed. Both had impressive moments, but neither managed to enjoy the consistent run of football needed to become a long-term defensive leader.

So, Who Was Actually Better?

This is where the debate gets interesting!

If you value aggression, versatility and defensive commitment, Rojo has a strong argument. If you prefer pace, physical dominance and the ability to recover when a defence is exposed, Bailly could be your choice.

For me, Rojo edges it slightly when judging their overall contribution at Manchester United, particularly because of his important role during Mourinho’s successful 2016/17 campaign.

However, Bailly arguably had the higher athletic ceiling. Had injuries and inconsistency not held him back, the conversation might have been very different.

Now it is over to the United faithful!
