Martin Zubimendi is reportedly open to leaving Real Sociedad as soon as next month, with Liverpool stepping up their efforts to secure a £91m double deal in January.
Liverpool had previously identified Zubimendi as their primary transfer target last summer, seeing him as a perfect fit for Arne Slot’s midfield. Although they were prepared to trigger his £51m release clause, Zubimendi chose to stay loyal to his boyhood club. However, The Times now reports that he has reconsidered, attracting interest from Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal.
Liverpool had always planned to make another attempt to sign Zubimendi in January, regardless of his earlier decision. Meanwhile, Manchester City is set to invest heavily in the winter window, with a new central midfielder to back up Rodri reportedly their top priority. That said, The Telegraph suggests Zubimendi is hesitant about joining City due to concerns about potentially being relegated to a bench role once Rodri returns.
While starting spots at Anfield would also be highly competitive, Liverpool’s recruitment team views Zubimendi as an ideal fit for Slot’s system, which would likely ensure him a regular starting role. Arsenal is also still in the race, with plans to strengthen their midfield in 2025.
In addition to pursuing Zubimendi, Liverpool is targeting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez to improve their left-back position. With Andy Robertson now 30, the club is looking toward the future. Bournemouth is reportedly asking £40m for Kerkez, but Liverpool remains determined to reinforce their squad for a title challenge.
