Araújo recently extended his contract with Barcelona until 2031, with a release clause set at 70 million. The club’s goal was to lock him down with this clause, ensuring they could secure a transfer fee should he decide to move on.
While Juventus, under Thiago Motta, showed interest in Araújo during the winter transfer window, they sought a loan deal with an option to buy. Flick opted to keep Araújo in his squad, as he is a dedicated player who would prefer to finish his career at Barcelona. However, with competition from other defenders like Cubarsí, Íñigo Martínez, Eric García, and Christensen, his role is not guaranteed.
Araújo plans to evaluate his situation by the end of the season, when he will decide his future based on how Flick utilizes him. Though he’s been rotated in the lineup, he’s not considered an irreplaceable figure, which leaves the door open for potential departures.
Juventus is prepared to meet the 70 million clause to secure Araújo’s permanent transfer if he chooses to leave. Barcelona has left the decision to the player, with the condition that the full release clause is paid if he decides to go.
Deco, speaking with TV3, emphasized that the club would support Araújo’s decision, whether he stays or leaves. He explained that an unhappy player can be a problem for the team and that they’ve had conversations with Araújo, who was content with his current situation. Deco also expressed confidence in Araújo’s long-term future at Barcelona, suggesting that if he wanted to leave, he wouldn’t have renewed his contract in the first place.
Regarding transfers, Deco noted that the club no longer has the same urgency to sign multiple players. He praised the impact of recent signings and the development of young players like Pedri, Gavi, and Araújo, which has reduced the pressure to bring in new talent. Deco also pointed out the spending spree by Manchester City in January, highlighting the financial challenges Barcelona faces in comparison.
