Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has spoken out after being sent off following a confrontation with Abdoulaye Doucoure that led to a brawl in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton.
Jones was dismissed after pushing Doucoure shortly after the final whistle, triggering a large altercation between the two teams. The England international had already received a yellow card earlier in the match for a late tackle, and his second booking came for his actions with Doucoure.
Doucoure also received a second yellow card after running towards the away section and gesturing to the crowd. Both Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulsoff were also sent off by referee Michael Oliver after the match.
Doucoure broke his silence on the match about an hour after full-time, posting pictures of himself celebrating and showing banners inside Goodison Park on Twitter. This Merseyside derby was significant as it was the last at Everton’s historic stadium before their move to the new Bramley Moore Dock ground next season.
Everton’s James Tarkowski scored a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time, securing a point after Beto had put them ahead in the first half.
Jones, who, like Doucoure, will miss his team’s next match due to the red card issued after the game, also took to Twitter. However, he did not address the incident with Doucoure, instead posting a message that read: “Always together!” He shared photos of Liverpool’s celebrations after Mohamed Salah’s second goal and of himself dribbling past Everton’s Jesper Lindstrom.
PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has suggested that the altercation may be investigated by police, as a bottle appeared to be thrown from the stands, hitting Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who had joined the brawl. Hackett commented to Football Insider, “Both teams will be charged for failing to control their players, and we will likely see the results of that today. There will also be an investigation into who threw the bottle. They’ll be reviewing video footage this morning to try to identify the person responsible.”
