In a press conference today, Real Betis midfielder Isco issued a heartfelt apology to Real Madrid fans for his goal celebration in their recent match. The former Madrid player clarified that his intention was never to offend or disrespect his old club’s supporters.
“I’m sorry, Madrid fans,” Isco said. “I didn’t mean to celebrate the way I did.” He went on to emphasize his deep respect for Real Madrid and its fans, reflecting on the special memories he created at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The celebration, which involved a specific hand gesture, was initially seen by some as a slight toward his former club. However, Isco explained that the gesture was part of a promise he made to a young Real Betis fan. The girl, whose parents are hearing-impaired, had taught him the sign for “I love you” in sign language and asked him to use it if he scored.
“A young girl told me about her deaf parents and asked if I could celebrate a goal using this sign,” Isco shared. “I was moved by her story and wanted to honor her request.”
This wasn’t the first time Isco used the gesture. While playing for Real Madrid, he celebrated a goal against Sporting Gijón in the same way for another young fan with hearing-impaired parents, an act that was widely praised at the time.
Reaffirming his appreciation for Real Madrid, Isco said, “My years at Madrid were some of the most meaningful in my career. I would never intentionally upset the supporters.”
He concluded by expressing hope that his explanation would resolve any misunderstandings and reminded everyone that football should be about passion, respect, and unity. “I hope we can move forward together and continue celebrating the beautiful game,” Isco added.
