Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged that Kylian Mbappé “wasn’t at his best” following Real Madrid’s surprising 2-1 defeat to Real Betis on March 1, 2025, explaining the decision to substitute the French forward.

Ancelotti criticized his team’s overall performance, pointing to a lack of attitude and commitment, which he warned would not be enough in their upcoming Champions League match against Atlético Madrid.

He expressed disappointment that, after a strong start, the team lost control of the game, leading to careless turnovers and Betis gaining the upper hand. Ancelotti stressed the need for urgent improvement ahead of key fixtures.

As for Mbappé, Ancelotti explained that the forward had not been at full fitness due to health issues and limited recent training, which led to the decision to substitute him in order to avoid further complications and ensure he would be ready for future matches.

Ancelotti also credited Betis for their performance, admitting that Real Madrid’s lack of control and commitment contributed to the defeat. He called for a swift reaction from his players to stay on track with their season objectives.

The loss leaves Real Madrid tied with Barcelona at the top of La Liga on 54 points, though Barcelona holds a game in hand. Atlético Madrid is close behind in third, just one point off the leaders, with a game in hand as well.

Recent concerns have been raised over the team’s defensive effort, with experts noting a lack of energy. Ancelotti’s dissatisfaction highlights the need for a significant turnaround to stay competitive in both domestic and European competitions.
