Liverpool and Newcastle Set to Compete for Premier League Star
Liverpool and Newcastle United are set to battle it out for one of the Premier League’s most sought-after defenders this summer.
Newcastle made a move to strengthen their defense in the previous transfer window but fell short in their pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
The England international impressed at Euro 2024, drawing the attention of top clubs, and since then, his performances have been closely monitored by teams eager to bolster their backlines.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes both Liverpool and Newcastle will make a move for Guehi, but he sees Liverpool as the favorites to secure his signature.
Liverpool Leading the Race for Guehi?
In an interview with Football Insider, Robinson said:
“Liverpool would be a great fit for him. Crystal Palace won’t let him go for free, so this summer represents their chance to cash in.
With just one year left on his contract, his price could drop slightly, but a bidding war could keep that from happening.
“Newcastle were keen on him last summer, and Palace will likely demand a similar fee this time around. They’ve managed Guehi’s development well, and both sides know the move is coming soon.
“It’ll come down to who can offer the most, and that won’t be limited to just Premier League clubs—he’ll have options across Europe. Steve Parish is known for tough negotiations, and this summer will be no different.
“Liverpool’s relatively quiet recruitment in recent windows means they have solid financial flexibility. This gives them an advantage in the race, as they’re in a position to make moves within PSR and FFP regulations.”
Liverpool’s Need for Defensive Reinforcements
With Arne Slot set to take over, Liverpool desperately need defensive reinforcements, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future.
Their financial strength positions them well to compete for Guehi, potentially outbidding Newcastle in the process.
For Crystal Palace, holding on to their star defender will be a challenge. Guehi’s contract runs until 2026, but with only one year left after this season, Palace may be forced to sell while they still can.
