Arsenal and Chelsea have reportedly surpassed Liverpool in the race to sign Marcus Thuram from Inter Milan, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
In the latest Football Insider podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Thuram, 27, has a £71million release clause in his contract. However, Inter Milan is working to secure a new deal with the striker, as they are keen to retain him beyond the summer transfer window. Thuram remains a vital part of their future plans, with the Serie A side aiming for a 21st Scudetto this season under manager Simone Inzaghi.
The French international’s strong performances have attracted interest from top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, as well as several European teams. Thuram has made 27 appearances (23 starts) this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 4 assists, showcasing his importance to Inter’s success.
Liverpool’s interest in Thuram comes as they reportedly consider parting ways with Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan striker has had a challenging season with just 7 goals and 7 assists in 39 appearances, and he is not part of manager Arne Slot’s long-term plans. As a result, Liverpool is looking to secure a more consistent goalscorer, and Thuram is emerging as one of their top targets.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has been in search of a new striker for some time and has been strongly linked with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Chelsea, on the other hand, is looking to strengthen their forward line, particularly with competition for Nicolas Jackson, following a lengthy injury absence that left them without a reliable center-forward.
As Liverpool looks to replace Nunez, they have also set their sights on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, with Football Insider reporting that the club views the Swedish forward as the ideal fit for Slot’s system. However, concerns over Newcastle’s high asking price—possibly as much as £150million—could deter Liverpool from pursuing Isak this summer.
