Veteran football commentator Martin Tyler has responded to claims that he displayed bias against Liverpool during his 33-year tenure at Sky Sports. Many Reds fans have long accused him of lacking enthusiasm when calling Liverpool goals compared to other teams.
Speaking on DR Sports, Tyler was asked about these accusations, particularly referencing Andy Cantwell’s viral impersonation, which humorously mimicked his supposedly deadpan reactions to Liverpool goals. In response, the 79-year-old simply pointed to his extensive catalog of Steven Gerrard goals as proof that he wasn’t biased.
However, this response has done little to quell the debate. Critics argue that Tyler’s tone and excitement levels seemed to vary depending on the team scoring, with some key Liverpool moments receiving less energetic calls compared to similar events involving Manchester United, Chelsea, or Arsenal.
Additionally, Tyler’s past controversial comments—such as his remarks linking the Hillsborough disaster to hooliganism—have further strained his relationship with Liverpool supporters. Clips from past matches, including a notable game where both Anthony Martial and Christian Benteke scored, have been cited as evidence of his unequal enthusiasm in commentary.
While Tyler’s legendary status as the Premier League Commentator of the Decade (2000s) is undisputed, his brief response to the bias claims has left many fans unconvinced. Given his long career in football broadcasting, it’s difficult to prove an intentional bias, but for Liverpool supporters, the discussion remains far from settled.
