UEFA Clarifies Reversal of Real Madrid Penalty Against Arsenal After VAR Review
Real Madrid were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after a 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the second leg of their quarterfinal clash, following a 3-0 defeat in the first leg. However, a key decision involving VAR could have potentially changed the course of the match, and UEFA has now clarified what happened.
During the 23rd minute of the game, referee Francois Letexier initially awarded Real Madrid a penalty due to a foul by Declan Rice on Kylian Mbappe inside the box. He also gave Rice a yellow card. But after a VAR review, the decision was overturned. The screen at the stadium soon displayed: “No penalty – No foul,” explaining that no infraction had occurred.
