All attention now shifts to the semi-final clash with Athletic Bilbao, and manager Ernesto Valverde has already commented on the upcoming matchup.
Valverde Reacts: United Belong in the Champions League
After Bilbao’s recent match, Valverde praised Manchester United, acknowledging the club’s stature and the tough challenge ahead.
“Manchester United are a Champions League club. Right now, they’re treating the Europa League as their only path to where they belong,” he told Touchline X.
While his comments were respectful, they may subtly paint Bilbao as the underdogs going into the tie—a narrative United would be more than happy to embrace, especially with their confidence soaring after the dramatic comeback victory.
A Familiar Face and a Missed Appointment
This clash adds an extra layer of intrigue: Manchester United nearly appointed Valverde in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s departure. However, the Spaniard never made the move—now he will face the club he almost joined in one of the biggest matches of his recent managerial career.
Valverde has an unblemished record against United, having eliminated them from the Champions League in 2019 with Barcelona. Amorim and his players will certainly keep this history in mind as they prepare for what could be their toughest challenge yet.
Eyes on the Final—and the Champions League
In the other semi-final, Spurs will meet Bodø/Glimt. The winner of the United vs. Bilbao matchup will likely be the favorite heading into the final. For United, this trophy is more important than just adding silverware; it’s their ticket back to the Champions League, a stage Valverde believes they belong on.
The first leg takes place in Bilbao on May 1st, with high hopes that it could be the first of two visits to the Spanish city before the month concludes.
