Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has lauded Sofyan Amrabat for his standout performance in United’s 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester City.
Chosen to anchor the midfield in the number six role over the not fully fit Casemiro, the Moroccan international delivered a commanding performance. Amrabat made 37 touches, completed 93% of his passes (25 out of 27), won two duels, made two tackles and clearances each, and blocked one shot—all while only losing possession three times.
Scholes took to Instagram after the match, drawing comparisons between Amrabat and a “prime Gennaro Gattuso,” praising the energy and fight he brought to the final. He also expressed hope that Amrabat stays at the club and becomes a regular starter next season, amid speculation about his future.
Amrabat arrived at Manchester United on loan from Fiorentina last summer, with the club paying €10 million for the temporary move. Although initially deployed out of position at left-back by Erik ten Hag, he gradually found more opportunities in midfield.
Only recently has the 27-year-old been given a fair run in the team, impressing in matches against Arsenal and Newcastle before earning his spot in the cup final.
With Casemiro seemingly past his prime and a €20 million purchase option available, United may consider keeping Amrabat permanently.
