The Premier League has issued an official statement regarding the controversial penalty incident in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Wolves at Anfield. Diogo Jota was initially awarded a penalty for a challenge by Wolves’ Emmanuel Agbadou in the 57th minute, but after a VAR review, the decision was correctly overturned.
The Premier League clarified that the VAR check showed the contact came from Jota, who clipped Agbadou’s torso with his foot as he shifted onto his right. There was no foul by Agbadou, and the video assistant referee recommended an on-field review. Referee Simon Hooper overturned his initial decision, and play resumed with a drop ball.
Pundit Stephen Warnock, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, supported the decision, stating, “I don’t think it’s a penalty. No penalty. The right decision. Liverpool fans will think it’s a clear penalty, but I don’t think Simon Hooper needs to see another angle.”
Agbadou, meanwhile, was substituted after injuring himself during the challenge. Liverpool were leading 2-0 at the time, with Luis Diaz having scored early and Mohamed Salah converting a penalty in the 37th minute.
