With Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool uncertain and Darwin Núñez struggling for consistency, former Reds striker Michael Owen has suggested two potential replacements for the club.
Salah’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and with no renewal in place, the Egyptian forward could depart. Meanwhile, Núñez’s inconsistency has led to reports that new manager Arne Slot is considering other attacking options.
Liverpool’s attacking issues were evident in their recent League Cup final loss to Newcastle United, where Alexander Isak’s decisive goal sealed the Magpies’ victory.
Owen Backs Isak as Salah’s Successor
Speaking to Liverpool Echo, Owen urged Liverpool to pursue Newcastle striker Alexander Isak if Salah leaves. “If Salah goes, Liverpool will definitely need another attacker, especially if Núñez departs too. There are plenty of options, but no one can truly replace Salah or match his goal numbers,” he said.
Owen believes signing Isak would be a major coup for Liverpool, describing him as an “incredible” option. However, he acknowledged the challenge of prying him away from Newcastle, given the interest from other top clubs like Arsenal. “Every team wants him, and Newcastle will fight to keep him. It’ll be an interesting battle,” Owen added.
Antoine Semenyo Also on Liverpool’s Radar
Owen also suggested Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as an alternative, highlighting his energy and goal-scoring ability. “He’s a younger player, full of energy, with the potential to develop into a top forward,” he noted.
With Isak attracting significant interest, Liverpool may need to act quickly to secure their top target. If they miss out, they have reportedly lined up a more affordable alternative to reinforce their attack ahead of next season.
