Xabi Alonso Begins Real Madrid Era by Targeting Two Barcelona-Linked Players
Xabi Alonso, the current Bayer Leverkusen manager who guided the German club to a historic season, is set to take over as Real Madrid’s new head coach this summer, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti. His arrival marks the start of a new chapter at the Bernabéu.
Alonso is not coming alone—he’s already identified two key signings that could both strengthen Madrid and strike a blow to their rivals, FC Barcelona. These are players Barcelona had shown strong interest in but may now slip through their fingers.
Jonathan Tah, a cornerstone of Alonso’s Leverkusen side, is at the top of the list. The German center-back, whose contract expires this summer, is available for free. Although Barcelona had been in talks with him—viewing him as a possible replacement for Ronald Araújo—financial difficulties and uncertainties about their project have slowed negotiations. Real Madrid, with Alonso’s influence, may now be in pole position to sign him. Tah’s leadership, experience, and physical presence align with Madrid’s defensive needs.
The second target is Álex Grimaldo, a former Barcelona academy product who’s had a breakout season under Alonso at Leverkusen. Since moving from Benfica, the left-back has impressed with his attacking contributions and tactical intelligence. Although Grimaldo left Barça years ago without breaking into the first team, a move to Real Madrid would be a dramatic twist. Alonso values his playing style and sees him as a more dynamic alternative to Ferland Mendy. Grimaldo is under contract until 2027, but a relatively low release clause and his strong relationship with Alonso could make the transfer possible.
