Trent Alexander-Arnold to Leave Liverpool for Real Madrid on a Free Transfer
After two decades with Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly set to join Real Madrid once his contract expires. The 26-year-old right-back will sign a five-year deal with the Spanish club, featuring a notable pay rise and a hefty signing-on fee, according to The Sun.
Alexander-Arnold declined Liverpool’s offer to extend his contract, opting instead for a new chapter abroad. While Real Madrid haven’t officially confirmed the move, the speculation has been ongoing for some time. The club has openly expressed interest in the England international.
A Lucrative Deal
As per Marca, the defender will receive a €20 million (£17 million) signing bonus, spread over the duration of his contract. His annual salary is expected to be around €15 million (£13 million), a significant increase from his previous Liverpool earnings.
Despite Liverpool’s attempts to retain him with a lucrative offer, Alexander-Arnold chose Real Madrid, motivated by a desire for personal and professional development.
Madrid’s Urgency for a Right-Back
Real Madrid’s need for a new right-back became more pressing due to injuries in their squad. With Lucas Vázquez and Federico Valverde filling in out of position, the club views Alexander-Arnold as a long-term solution.
Though money may not be the sole reason for his departure, financial incentives played a role. Signing him as a free agent allows Madrid to invest in bonuses, a strategy they used previously with Kylian Mbappe.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are already preparing for life without him, with interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as a potential replacement.
