Trent Alexander-Arnold held back tears as his Liverpool teammates comforted him during his final appearance for the club. A product of Liverpool’s youth academy, the full-back has played over 250 games and is set to depart on a free transfer at the season’s end.
He’s expected to join Real Madrid, where he’ll reunite with fellow England star Jude Bellingham. Before making the move, he had a heartfelt goodbye at Anfield, the ground where he helped win every major trophy. Unlike previous matches, he was warmly welcomed when he entered as a halftime substitute.
During the second half, Alexander-Arnold played a key role, making vital passes that contributed to Mohamed Salah’s equalizer after Crystal Palace took the lead through Ismaila Sarr. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, closing the season on an emotional note.
After the final whistle, Alexander-Arnold appeared visibly moved, taking in Anfield one last time as teammates Harvey Elliott, Luis Díaz, and Virgil van Dijk offered comfort and embraces.
He later joined in the Premier League title celebrations, with Van Dijk receiving the trophy from club legend Alan Hansen, and Salah being awarded the Golden Boot by Ian Rush.
When the announcer read Alexander-Arnold’s name, the crowd responded with thunderous applause. He raised his hands to the fans and accepted his winner’s medal, visibly touched by the moment.
Earlier in May, he confirmed his exit on social media, writing:
“After 20 years with Liverpool, I’ll be leaving at the end of the season. This was the toughest decision of my life. Liverpool has been everything to me. From the academy to the first team, I’ve felt nothing but love and support. Now it’s time for a new journey—to grow and challenge myself in new ways.”
