Chelsea in Advanced Talks to Sign Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens for £50m Before Club World Cup
Chelsea are in discussions with Borussia Dortmund over a possible £50 million transfer for winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, aiming to finalize the deal before the FIFA Club World Cup begins in the U.S. on June 14.
The 20-year-old England U21 international, who previously spent time in Chelsea’s youth setup, has emerged as one of the club’s top summer targets. Reports indicate Chelsea have prioritized signing him and are accelerating talks after an initial approach back in January.
Gittens, who joined Dortmund in 2020, has impressed with standout performances in Germany, including helping Dortmund reach last season’s Champions League final. He also became the youngest English player to score in the Champions League earlier this season, finding the net against Real Madrid at just 20 years and 75 days old.
His development has attracted attention from England’s national team setup, with interim manager Lee Carsley noting his progress before Thomas Tuchel’s appointment. However, due to Dortmund’s Club World Cup commitments, Gittens won’t feature for the U21s in the upcoming Euros.
Chelsea’s renewed interest in Gittens comes amid uncertainty surrounding Jadon Sancho, another former Dortmund winger currently on loan from Manchester United. Chelsea are contractually bound to either make Sancho’s move permanent for £20–£25 million if they finish in the top 14, or pay a £5 million penalty if they opt out.
The Blues have already bolstered their attack by signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million. Now, attention turns fully to Gittens, seen as one of the brightest young English forwards in Europe.
The club is preparing for Club World Cup fixtures against Los Angeles FC, Flamengo, and Espérance de Tunis in Group D, and they’re aiming to enhance their squad with fresh attacking options ahead of the competition.
Christopher Nkunku is likely to depart following two injury-hit seasons, making space for reinforcements. With earlier interest in Alejandro Garnacho also reported, it’s clear Chelsea are focusing on adding dynamic young wingers to fit new head coach Enzo Maresca’s tactical vision – and Gittens may be a key part of that plan.
