Scotland manager Steve Clarke has suggested that Andy Robertson may be thinking about his future at Liverpool but remains confident that the defender can still compete for a starting spot at Anfield.
At 31, Robertson is approaching the end of his contract next summer, leaving his long-term future at the club uncertain. Despite helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title this season, his performances occasionally faced scrutiny as teammate Kostas Tsimikas challenged him for game time. Liverpool are actively pursuing a new left-back this summer, reportedly increasing their efforts to sign Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth.
Robertson is aware of these developments and has openly acknowledged the possibility of Liverpool bringing in the Hungarian defender, which could lead to either him or Tsimikas departing the club.
Clarke, who previously served as Liverpool’s assistant manager, expressed confidence that Robertson will still get plenty of playing time under manager Arne Slot, even if Kerkez arrives. He emphasized that he has not noticed any decline in Robertson’s form but hinted that the player might have a significant decision to make regarding his future this summer.
“If Andy chooses to stay and compete for his position, I’m certain he’ll get sufficient playing time,” Clarke said. “He has worked incredibly hard to build his career and maintain it.”
Robertson himself spoke to BBC Scotland, highlighting his confidence and dedication: “I back myself and believe in my abilities, which keeps me motivated. I’ve enjoyed eight wonderful years at Liverpool, winning trophies and being a key player, which I’m very proud of.
While I’m aware I’m not getting younger, I still believe I have plenty to offer. I focus on my own performance, not on competition around me.
I’m 31, and last season I didn’t miss a single game or training session physically. My body feels good, and although I can’t predict how I’ll feel in a couple of years, right now, I feel great.
I have one year left on my Liverpool contract, and the future remains uncertain.”
