Rodrygo Sends Clear Message on Liverpool as Reds Join Transfer Race
Rodrygo has made his stance on Liverpool known amid growing speculation that the Premier League champions are preparing a surprise move for the Real Madrid forward.
Since joining Madrid from Santos in 2019 for ยฃ39 million, the 24-year-old has been integral to the clubโs recent dominance under Carlo Ancelotti, helping them secure three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.
However, under new manager Xabi Alonso, Rodrygoโs role has diminished. Though he provided an assist in Madrid’s Club World Cup opener against Al Hilal, he saw limited action thereafterโplaying just 27 minutes across the rest of the tournament and missing out entirely in matches against Juventus, Pachuca, and a 4-0 semi-final loss to PSG.
Alonso has leaned towards using Gonzalo Garcia in the attacking role, while Brahim Diaz and Arda Guler have seen increased minutes, leaving Rodrygo out of favour.
Reports from Spain indicate that Alonso has full authority to sideline any player, regardless of status or cost.
While Arsenal and Chelsea have shown interest in Rodrygo, UOL Esporte reports that Madrid are demanding โฌ100 million (ยฃ86 million) for his transfer. Meanwhile, AS claims Liverpool have entered the race, monitoring the Brazilian closelyโespecially with Luis Diazโs future at Anfield uncertain amid interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
AS wrote: โLiverpool are eyeing Rodrygo as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz, though Madrid are yet to receive any formal offers.โ
Rodrygoโs Past Remarks on Liverpool
Rodrygo has faced Liverpool several times in Europe, winning four out of five matches, including the 2022 Champions League final where Vinicius Jr. scored the decisive goal.
Interestingly, Liverpool nearly signed Rodrygo in 2017 for a mere ยฃ2.5 million before Real Madrid swooped in.
Before a 2023 Champions League clash at Anfield, Rodrygo said:
“Playing at Anfield is always tough, with or without fans. Itโs never an easy game against Liverpool.”
Despite his previous admiration for the Reds, current reports suggest Arsenal are leading the race for his signature. According to AS, the winger wants control over his next moveโand his preferred destination is Arsenal.
