Liverpool Prepare Offer for Crystal Palace Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta

While much of the focus remains on Liverpoolโ€™s interest in Alexander Isak, the club is also actively exploring alternatives in case a deal for the Newcastle star doesnโ€™t materialise.

According to The Athleticโ€™s David Ornstein, Liverpool have initiated contact with Newcastle United about Isak, though no formal bid has been made yet for the ยฃ120 million-rated forward.

Meanwhile, reports from France earlier this week revealed that Liverpool have also expressed interest in Crystal Palaceโ€™s Jean-Philippe Mateta. New details now indicate that the Reds recently met with Mateta and his agent in Paris. Sources suggest the Merseyside club have prepared an offer in the range of โ‚ฌ50โ€“โ‚ฌ60 million (ยฃ43.3mโ€“ยฃ52m) for the 28-year-old.

However, Liverpool could face competition from AC Milan and Manchester United, both of whom are also monitoring the French striker. Mateta is reportedly open to a move to Serie A, which could give Milan an edge.

Crystal Palace have been trying to extend Matetaโ€™s contractโ€”set to expire in two yearsโ€”since December, but slow progress in talks could open the door to a summer departure.

Although Isak remains Liverpoolโ€™s top priority, Mateta is seen as a credible alternative. Pundit Jamie Carragher has praised the Palace forwardโ€™s clinical finishing and believes he has the quality to play for a Champions League-level club. His tally of 30 goals across the past two Premier League seasons supports that view.

Despite the reported meeting and potential offer, CaughtOffsideโ€™s Mark Brus stated that negotiations with Mateta are not yet at an advanced stage. Thereโ€™s also a possibility that he could still extend his stay at Selhurst Park, with interest also coming from Aston Villa and Marseille.

It appears Liverpool are keeping their options open under new sporting director Richard Hughes, ensuring they have backup plans if their pursuit of Isak fails. If things progress, Liverpoolโ€™s upcoming Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace on August 10 could carry added significance
